The minister of culture, youth, and sports in Lakes State says he will prioritize development programs for youth, enhance their participation in governance and create job opportunities.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday after meeting a group of youth in his office, Hon. William Koji Kerjok Kertim said he will also focus on youth empowerment.

He also pointed out that he will ensure youth are represented in all government institutions as required by the revitalized peace agreement.

Among his priorities, is the promotion of a peaceful culture especially among the youth who are mainly engaged in conflicts within the state.

Koji also called on development partners to support youth initiatives and help create employment opportunities so that youth become self-reliant.

For his part, the chairperson of the Rumbek Youth Sports Association (RYSA) Abbas Mayek Mayen appreciated the minister's initiative to discuss youth issues in the state.

He said the main challenges youth face include lack of jobs, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and insecurity forcing youth into communal violence.

“We also want the minister to reconcile the youth and support them in sports events and decision-making skills,” Mayek added.

Elizabeth Awell, a youth representative who also attended the meeting, said they also discussed challenges facing young women in the state.

She pointed out that they need support in skills development especially in sports and vocational training.
