Al-Burhan Affirms Government Keenness to Strengthen Partnership with European Union

Khartoum, Feb. 15 (SUNA) – The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lt. Gen. Abdul-Fattah A-Burhan, has affirmed the keenness of the transitional government to strengthen its partnership and cooperation with the European Union and its countries in all fields.

During his meeting Monday with the ambassadors of the European Union accredited to Sudan, Lt. Gen. Al-Burhan appreciated the position of the European Union in supporting the transitional period in Sudan.

He briefed the EU ambassadors on the political, security and economic developments in Sudan and related developments in the countries of the region, while the European Union ambassadors briefed him on the EU pledges and the levels of the development and humanitarian cooperation and political and diplomatic support to Sudan.

The head of the European Union mission to Sudan, Robert Van Den Dool, said in a press statement that they congratulated the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council on formation of the new transitional government, affirming the European Union's determination to strengthen its partnership with it for achieving democratic transition and sustainable development in Sudan.

He said that the European Union has expressed its concern about the current troubles in the Horn of Africa and praised the constructive role that Sudan plays in the stability of the region in his capacity as chair of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), declaring the Union's support to a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the tensions between Sudan and Ethiopia.

The ambassador of the European Union to Khartoum asserted the EU commitment to support the new civilian coalition government to achieve the aspired reforms, expressing the EU awareness about the Armed Forces’ role in coalition as the protector of the peaceful transition.

The EU ambassador expressed the EU aspiration to strengthen its partnership with Sudan by agreeing on a broad political and strategic dialogue between the two sides, stressing that the European Union will continue its support for the democratic transition in Sudan in a way that provides peace, prosperity and justice for all.
